René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle (1643-1687) was a French explorer. He
was sent by King Louis XIV (14) to travel south from Canada and sail down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. He
was the first European to travel the length of the Mississippi River (1682). His mission was to explore and establish fur-trade
routes. In
1682 A.D. Explorer Robert La Salle explored east of the Rocky Mountains , now known as Colorado and claimed the
land surrounding this area for France. Although both Spain and France claimed the
Colorado region, neither chose to settle the area. La Salle Pass was established by the explorer as an exploration route through
the mountains. La Salle was shot and killed by a group of five mutineers (near Navasota,
Texas) on March 19, 1687. They left his body for the animals to eat.
La Salle Pass is an easy trail
west of Colorado Springs near Wilkerson pass off Rt. 24. High ground clearance is recommended
